Lt. Governor’s Office Now Vacant
Iowa’s Lt. Governor Adam Gregg has resigned from office abruptly, leaving the office vacant. The resignation is effective immediately, according to a statement from Gregg's office. No reason was given for Gregg's resignation.
Gregg's Tenure as Lt. Governor
Gregg, a Republican, was elected Lt. Governor in 2018. During his time in office, he served as the President of the Iowa Senate. He also chaired the Economic Development Authority and the Workforce Development Board.
Possible Successors
According to Iowa law, the President of the Senate, currently Republican Jake Chapman, will become the acting Lt. Governor. However, Governor Kim Reynolds (R) will appoint a permanent replacement to serve out the remainder of Gregg's term, which ends in 2023.

Governor Reynolds released a statement expressing her surprise and disappointment at Gregg's resignation. She said she would appoint a replacement "who will continue to serve the people of Iowa with distinction."
Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver (R) said he was "saddened" by Gregg's resignation but wished him well in his future endeavors.
Senate Minority Leader Zach Wahls (D) said he was "disappointed" by Gregg's resignation but hoped the next Lt. Governor would be someone who "will work to bring Iowans together."
