Plant vs Animal Cells
Structures of Plant and Animal Cells
Plant and animal cells are the basic units of life for all living things. They have many similarities, but they also have some important differences. These differences are due to the different functions that plant and animal cells perform.
Chloroplasts
One of the most important differences between plant and animal cells is the presence of chloroplasts in plant cells. Chloroplasts are organelles that contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that absorbs light energy from the sun. This light energy is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar, a process known as photosynthesis. Animals do not need chloroplasts because they get their sugar from the food they eat.
